Changing role of the SAF
PUBLISHED ON 22 Jun 2018
The role of the Singapore Armed Forces has evolved over time to respond to the changing threats and security issues, said Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the recent Officer Cadet Course Commissioning Parade on 17 June 2018.

Congratulating the cadets, DPM Tharman also reminded about their role as leaders. “What you do and how you conduct yourselves will shape the national service experience of those who look up to you as officers and leaders. Lead them well, train them hard, and keep them safe,” he said.

DPM Tharman also spoke about the changing role of the SAF and its capabilities. Describing the SAF as being able to respond to Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief Operations, maritime security deployments and even peace support operations, the SAF will ‘have to continually evolve, adapt and respond’.

He emphasised that capabilities and infrastructure are not enough to deal with threats such as terrorism and also cyber threats, but the SAF has to work with partners to ‘build a network of strong defence ties’.

“We maintain and reaffirm these relationships with our friends, through regular exercises together. This year as the Chairman of ASEAN, Singapore is continuing to strengthen regional defence ties and enhance military cooperation between countries,” he added.
