Focus on job creation amid tech changes

Minister for Manpower Mrs Josephine Teo has stressed that it is important to pay attention to job creation, even though the Fourth Industrial Revolution is marked by digitisation, robots and artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the Singapore Summit Young Societal Leaders Programme on 18 September 2019, Mrs Teo pointed out that there is an “obsession” with trying to estimate the scale of how technology has an impact on jobs, particularly job losses. “It is important to pay attention to job creation, even as we think about and pay attention to the jobs that are being lost, because that’s really where the hope lies,” she reiterated.
Discussing her ministerial portfolio, Mrs Teo said four areas of employment outcomes “keep her awake at night”: keeping employment rates high; keeping unemployment rates low; having sustainable wage growth for citizens, and achieving a sense of financial security in retirement.
Acknowledging that the future of work will reshape, she said it is
important for workers and businesses to anticipate and tackle the
changes ahead.
