Gan Kim Yong’s hope for Singapore and Singaporeans is to have strong family and community bonds so that we can remain united as we face the challenges of the future and seize the opportunities that come our way, while caring and supporting one another to forge an inclusive nation.
Gan Kim Yong started his career in the civil service, then joined the private sector in 1989, where he worked his way up to lead Natsteel – a pan-Asian steel company. In 2005, he left Natsteel to take up political office and play a bigger role in keeping Singapore exceptional.
He is currently Minister for Trade and Industry, working to create opportunities for every Singaporean. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-chaired the Multi-Ministry Taskforce to get Singapore through the pandemic while protecting lives and livelihoods.
Prior to MTI, he was Minister for Health from 2011 to 2021. He drove a masterplan to ensure accessibility, quality and affordability of healthcare in Singapore including expanding healthcare infrastructure. He oversaw launches of the Pioneer Generation Package, Merdeka Generation Package, CareShield Life and MediShield Life to ensure Singaporeans can meet their healthcare cost needs. He also helmed the Ministerial Committee on Ageing to enable every senior to age with dignity and support.
As Minister for Manpower, he led efforts to minimise mass retrenchments during the economic recession in 2009. He also expanded our Continuing Education and Training system for older Singaporeans to update their skills and be able to grasp more opportunities.
Gan Kim Yong has been a Member of Parliament since 2001 and is proud to represent Chua Chu Kang GRC. He is married with two daughters.
