 Introduction

Besides being recognised for his “modest” fashion choices and youthful hairstyle, Member of Parliament Louis Ng is best known as an activist for single unwed parents, social workers, nurses, parenthood, climate change and secondhand smoke issues. Perennially donning a simple white polo shirt and khaki pants and sporting his signature centre parting is a reflection of how Louis optimises his life, leaving more time and energy to focus on speaking up.

A lifelong social advocate, Louis founded the animal welfare group Animal Concerns Rescue & Education Society (ACRES) in 2001 when he was an undergraduate at NUS. He turned a one-man team into an organisation of passionate staff and volunteers dedicated to tackling animal protection issues.

It was then famously suggested to Louis in 2008 that he “should help people the same way he helps animals”. Louis soon got involved as an activist with the People’s Action Party, before being fielded in Nee Soon East in 2015, and he continues to serve its residents wholeheartedly today.

Since joining politics, Louis has continued to speak up – a lot. He proudly holds the record for the parliamentarian from any political party with the most parliamentary questions and bill speeches in each of the last two terms.
