Introduction
Prior to entering politics, Tan See Leng was a family physician, entrepreneur, and Group Chief Executive Officer of IHH Healthcare – one of the world’s largest healthcare networks.
When leading IHH Healthcare, See Leng played a role in containing the outbreak of COVID-19 in the migrant worker dormitories at the height of the pandemic. When in government, he leveraged his experience in healthcare management to launch a new Primary Healthcare System and improve dormitory standards for migrant workers.
Relatedly, uplifting vulnerable workers is always at the top of See Leng’s mind. As Manpower Minister, he led the Jobs Taskforce which helped train and match locals, particularly mid-career workers who were harder hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, into jobs in key sectors with the most growth potential. Under his charge, the Manpower Ministry continued to roll out Progressive Wage moves that will cover up to 94% of lower-wage workers by 2023.
A Marine Parade resident himself, See Leng has a deep kinship with the community. As MP for the area, he spearheaded many municipal improvement works, such as the Home Improvement Project (HIP) at Joo Chiat Complex and enhancing the amenities for the Complex’s residential blocks. He has also pushed for several infrastructure projects to improve the accessibility of Marine Parade to all residents. He also started the local Caregiver Support Network to support caregivers there.
Even before entering politics, See Leng was involved in many social welfare projects, especially in the Marine Parade community, such as The Hut Ltd, a children’s charity established at Marine Crescent to promote social mobility. As MP, he continues to support many organisations that work to help the vulnerable and strengthen the community.
