We asked our some of our MPs about their favourite memories of Hari Raya, and here’s what they have to say ?

Memories of going out visiting, with my parents in our new clothes – that is something I will always remember

As a young boy I would visit my Muslim neighbours living at block 53, Marine Terrace with my friends. We even visited neighbours we did not know. They always welcomed us warmly and were nice to us. Better still, got “collection!”

When I was younger, the Geylang Serai bazaar was a must-go. That was where we got our Hari Raya shopping done. Dad would take time off from driving his taxi – and we have one night to get all our shopping and errands done. I used to hate it because we would go to one shop – only one – and get everything there. My two brothers and I would all wear the same set. But I now look back at those days with great fondness. Walking the bazar now, I can see snippets of grumpy young me.
Every morning, I would be assigned to send Hari Raya goodies to our neighbours, before we go visiting. We used to squeeze in my Dad’s taxi and visit our relatives. It was very nice. And of course, collecting the Raya packets was a great bonus.

Hari Raya would mean lots of visiting! Visiting relatives together with all my siblings and their respective families.

I have very fond memories of making kuih Raya and ketupat with my late grandmothers and my Mother.

When I was younger, I remember always going to Geylang Serai market and bazaar with mum and making lontong with her. These days, I participate in the Geylang Serai bazaar light-up!

Raya mornings with my family was always an exciting time. We will be dressed in our baju Melayu all ready for morning prayers. After prayers, we will have breakfast together before proceeding to ask each other’s forgiveness, a timeless tradition that we practice and pass on to the younger ones in the family.
MP for Jurong GRC Rahayu Mahzam
When I was much younger, my mother used to sew new curtains and cushion covers for Hari Raya herself. She would try very hard not to waste any material. So I remembered that if the curtains in one room were curved downwards, the ones in the other room were curved upwards. And we would have triangle shaped cushions. The curtains and vcushions were oddly shaped sometimes but they were fun.
