To mark the International Day for Old Persons (IDOP) on October 1, the People’s Action Party Seniors Group (PAP.SG) acknowledges the contributions of seniors in Singapore towards nation-building and expresses its thanks to the Government for implementing initiatives to benefit seniors.

In a press release, PAP.SG listed some of the initiatives introduced to address key issues such as:

  • Raising re-employment age from 67 to 70 years old by 2030, and raising CPF contributions rates for workers above 55 years old
  • HealthySG Taskforce’s recommendations to transform Singapore’s health promotion landscape, with the infusion and integration of health in various aspects of Singaporeans’ lives and the environment
  • Plans by the Government to launch its first assisted living pilot site for public housing at Bukit Batok next year

Earlier in January 2019, PAP.SG submitted a paper to the Government that contained recommendations to help seniors in Singapore live their lives healthily, with purpose and dignity. These recommendations were gathered through engagement sessions and focus group discussions with activists, volunteers, and experts on healthcare and ageing issues.

In the paper, PAP.SG had called for more work opportunities through tripartism and the adoption of flexible work arrangements for seniors who wish to and are able to work. Besides asking for the Government to dedicate more resources like sports facilities and gyms to cater to seniors’ needs, PAP.SG also recommended that the Government fulfil seniors’ desire for diverse housing options and accessibility to public spaces.

PAP.SG remains committed to work on issues that affect the elderly and will continue to give recommendations that address concerns on the ground and improve the quality of life of our elderly.
