Introduction
Baey Yam Keng is a firm believer in having the courage to venture into uncharted waters. Although this may sometimes result in failure, he believes that these experiences offer valuable lessons that can ultimately lead to success.
This philosophy is reflected in his work as Member of Parliament since he was elected in 2006. Yam Keng was one of the few MPs who spoke up in 2007 in favour of the repeal of Section 377A, which was eventually rescinded in 2022.
Yam Keng is also among the first local politicians to pioneer the use of social media. This has enabled him to connect with Singaporeans across different generations and through different channels. During the pandemic, he explored alternative ways to keep up with his constituents, hosting monthly birthday celebrations on Zoom and organising virtual games.
Yam Keng applies this same innovative approach to community initiatives and programmes for his constituents, and he seeks new ways to tap into the generosity and strength of the tight-knit community. For example, his Tampines North Branch has collected over 1,000 bags of rice from the public in a single morning and distributed them to those living in rental flats. He introduced the My Kind of Fridge project in 2017, which has been replicated and adapted in many parts of Singapore for the public to donate and rescue food. Another long-standing community initiative is the monthly free haircuts he has organised since 2014 – an offering that has now expanded to nail trimming for his residents.
