The People’s Action Party has appointed Melvin Yong Yik Chye, Member of Parliament (MP) for Radin Mas SMC as Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Social and Family Development with effect from today. He has been a member of the GPC since 2018. He replaced Seah Kian Peng, MP for Marine Parade GRC, who was elected as the new Speaker of Parliament on 2 August 2023.
Set up by the PAP in 1987, GPCs give their members the opportunity to scrutinise the legislation and programmes of the various ministries and serve as an additional feedback channel on government policies.
