Introduction
Heng Chee How has devoted his working life to serving the community. His own life experience convinced him that sound public policy and earnest effort can uplift the self, the family, the community, and the country.
Purpose, people, possibility and persistence describe Chee How’s work for his constituents in Whampoa Division of Jalan Besar GRC, where he has been the MP since 2001. He is grateful for the privilege of serving the people of Whampoa, and of Singapore through the different government roles he has undertaken over the years.
After graduating from university, Chee How worked with the Singapore Police Force before joining the National Trades Union Congress. Through various roles in the Labour Movement since, he strived to make the intent of “Every Worker Matters” more real and equitable amid an ever-changing economy and workforce. He champions especially for older workers, and his efforts and those of like-minded others have led to protective and enabling legislation. This includes strengthening employment of older workers through the retirement and re-employment law, tripartite guidelines on fair employment, and the progressive improvements in employer CPF contribution rates that older workers enjoy.
Chee How brings the same enthusiasm to care for the Whampoa community. When he first became the MP for Whampoa, the demography there was clearly older and fast aging. His priorities were to strengthen programming, infrastructure, and services for seniors, while at the same time lobby for rejuvenation of the constituency through new public housing and amenities development, so as to bring in and bring back younger people. He wants Whampoa to be a welcoming home for both.
