Grace Fu – Jurong-Clementi Town Council Sustainability Committee

I advocate for sustainable practices within the community. The Jurong-Clementi Town Council (JRTC) Sustainability Committee was formed in April 2022 to bring together different stakeholders from the public, private, and people sectors (e.g. residents, community partners, town management stakeholders, service providers, sustainability experts), to co-create and implement initiatives that can reduce the carbon and resource footprint of the community.

This is aligned with the spirit of the Forward SG's Steward Pillar - getting all segments of society to foster a more sustainable way of life and steward our shared environmental resources responsibly for future generations.

Examples of JRTC Sustainability Committee's collaborations in Yuhua include:
i. Residents, community stakeholders, and SMRT, to repurpose decommissioned MRT seats as void deck benches, with plans to install more at other blocks and communal locations in the near future.
ii. With horticulture contractors, to bring in a woodchipper to turn horticulture waste into mulch, which can be used as an eco-friendly and low-carbon fertiliser to enrich and insulate soil.
iii. With ChopValue Singapore, Yuhua Village, and Yuhua Place hawker centres, to harvest used disposable chopsticks to be upcycled into furniture, homewares, and accessories. The Yuhua hawker centres are the first in Singapore to work with ChopValue on this upcycling initiative.
iv. With Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore, ComCrop, and community stakeholders, with funding from SG Eco Fund, to set up the Yuhua Agritech Solar Living Lab, which co-locates solar panels and soil-less agri-tech as an urban farming concept.
v. With SembCorp, HDB, and community stakeholders, to install solar photovoltaic panels atop 66 blocks in Yuhua.
vi. With community stakeholders, to set up community gardens and allotment gardens to promote sustainable local food production practices, and with Food Citizen and other stakeholders for composting of organic waste from hawker centres and wet markets for use in the gardens.

In PAP Women's Wing, we play our part by strengthening community support for Singapore's sustainable future. Let us start reducing our carbon footprint today!
