Jurong West residents can look forward to a new two-storey market complex, said Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC Mr Ang Wei Neng.

The good news was announced at the official opening of a temporary market in front of Block 495 Jurong West Street 41 on 1 January 2017, after a huge blaze destroyed the Jurong West coffee shop and wet market in October 2016.

Mr Ang, together with Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Senior Minister of State Mr Desmond Lee, welcomed a group of about 20 stallholders who were able to resume their businesses at the temporary market, ahead of the Chinese New Year.

Speaking at the official opening, Mr Ang shared that the first floor of the new complex will be about the same size as the previous wet market and eating house, while the second storey will have social communal facilities such as a senior care centre.

Plans for the new market will also see wider aisles, better ventilation and elderly friendly designs such as non-slip tiles.

The new market complex is expected to cost about S$6.2 million and will be fully funded by the Government.

Construction on the new market complex is slated to start mid-2017 and completed by the end of December 2018.
