Pushing forth from the General Election 2020, the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) will focus on working together with Singaporeans to overcome the crisis of a generation.
This was outlined in the PAP manifesto, titled “Our Lives, Our Jobs, Our Future”, which was articulated by Secretary-General Lee Hsien Loong today (27 June).
As Singapore is in the midst of a global crisis, Mr Lee said that he had called for a General Election so that the next government can hone in on urgent problems and deal with them decisively.
Some of these relate to the repercussions of COVID-19. In his live broadcast – which took place on the PAP’s social media channels in a nod to safe distancing measures – Mr Lee explained that the manifesto describes:
- How to keep Singaporeans and migrant workers safe, and prevent COVID-19 from overwhelming Singapore’s healthcare system and hospitals.
- How to restart and transform the economy, save jobs and businesses, and reskill workers.
- How to provide mutual care and support, so that Singaporeans can keep safe amidst the uncertainties ahead.
Beyond COVID-19, the manifesto also sets out the PAP’s longer-term plans to build a better Singapore.
Addressing Singaporeans, Mr Lee said, “Our aim is not just to survive the storm, but also to maintain the long-term direction for the country and keep on building and improving Singapore. This is the manifesto of a responsible party and government.
“Singaporeans can rely on the PAP government, both to address your immediate needs, and also to work with you to secure your long-term future. What the PAP promises, the PAP will deliver.”
To realise the manifesto, Mr Lee called on Singaporeans to give him and his PAP team a strong mandate to improve lives for Singaporeans and take Singapore forward.
“Whom you choose to form the next Government – and the quality of that leadership – is absolutely critical. But even the best leadership team is only as strong as the support it gets. So we must fight hard to convince Singaporeans that our PAP team is their team, and deserves their full support,” Mr Lee said.
